Training
Fellowship in Trauma Surgery
Two fellows are accepted each year. The program aims to provide comprehensive clinical experience in trauma, as well as training in quality improvement processes, teaching and research. The program is accredited for ANZAST Post Fellowship Training in Trauma Surgery
CLINICAL DUTIES:
Trauma: The fellows are responsible for overseeing the care of trauma patients admitted to the Trauma Service. They are expected to function at the level of a junior consultant. Clinical trauma nursing staff support includes a Trauma Program Manager and Trauma Case Manager. The fellows alternate coverage for the Trauma Service on a weekly basis. During their week on service, the fellow is expected to provide leadership at all major trauma calls during business hours, and after-hours. They are expected to supervise and teach the junior members of the Trauma Service. The fellow is supervised by the Trauma Consultant of the week.
Elective Surgery: There are opportunities to participate in elective general surgical procedures if so desired. A general surgical list and an HPB list are available for the fellow(s) to be involved with.
On-call Duties: The fellows alternate weekly calls as the primary senior on-call for trauma. After hours, the on-site registrars will contact the fellow for every major trauma, and attendance is expected for any “Code Crimson” and/or significant multi-trauma requiring senior decision making and leadership. The fellow is expected to take primary senior call for acute surgery, when the trauma surgeons are on call. This equates to approximately 1 night per week and 1 weekend in 8. In-house call is not mandatory, but prompt attendance is expected.
Teaching and Administrative Duties: The fellow is expected to be involved with teaching of surgical trainees as well as medical students. Application for a clinical academic appointment with the University of Sydney will be supported. The fellow will be responsible for presenting the multi-disciplinary Trauma Audit as well as preparing the yearly death review.
FORMAL RESEARCH COMPONENT:
- At least one presentation at a national/international scientific meeting.
- At least one research publication in a peer reviewed journal.
- The research component is supported by a longstanding trauma registry, data manager, and trauma research staff. There is close collaboration with the Westmead Hospital/University of Sydney Surgical Outcomes Research Centre.
