About Us

Overview

In accordance with the NSW Trauma Services Plan, Westmead Hospital (WMH) is one of six major adult trauma services in the Sydney metropolitan region. It is the designated Major Trauma Centre for Western Sydney and Western NSW. WMH has a District-wide and a supra-LHD role for managing complex trauma as well as supporting all facilities in the management and transfer of these patients.

Trauma represents a significant proportion of the acute presentations to WMH and the trauma service is responsible for the care of the multiply injured trauma patient, from presentation until discharge or transfer. Westmead has developed a unique model of care for trauma, involving multiple acute disciplines – including Emergency, Surgery, Anaesthetics and Intensive Care.

A dedicated team led by a senior Trauma Specialist, manages the trauma patients seven days per week, 24 hours a day. The team is free from conflicting commitments, and ensures that the trauma patient receives optimal care through performing life-saving emergent interventions and coordinating the various subspecialty teams that may be required.

In addition to the clinical responsibilities, the Trauma Service has significant roles in education, injury prevention, quality improvement and research on a local, state and national level.
